A SMALL HILL STREET VICTORY

Bringing Hill Street Home

For many years after leaving television screens, Hill Street Blues became strangely difficult to find.

Despite being recognised as one of the most influential drama series ever made, reruns became increasingly rare and fans quietly began asking the same question:

Would Hill Street Blues ever properly return?

Around the world, longtime viewers worried that one of television’s landmark drama series might slowly disappear into memory — talked about, admired and remembered, but increasingly difficult to watch.

Over time, fan communities, collectors and television enthusiasts began pushing for a proper release. Conversations continued, letters were written and interest slowly gathered momentum.

Then, after years of uncertainty, something finally changed.

The Complete Series Finally Arrives

Hill Street Blues Complete DVD Collection

The long-awaited complete DVD release — finally arriving in 2014

In 2014, after years of hope and speculation, Hill Street Blues finally received the complete-series DVD treatment many viewers had hoped for.

Produced with the support of Twentieth Century Fox Television and released through Shout! Factory, the handsome collector’s edition brought together all seven seasons of the programme, retrospective material and newly recorded interviews celebrating the legacy of the series.

For longtime viewers, the release felt less like a product launch and more like welcoming old friends home.

Why The Release Mattered

For many viewers, the arrival of the complete DVD collection represented something much larger than a home entertainment release.

For years, episodes had become increasingly difficult to find. Outside occasional broadcasts in some countries, one of television’s most influential drama series had quietly become less visible than many believed it deserved to be.

As interest in classic television preservation slowly grew, so too did calls from viewers, collectors and long-time admirers hoping that Hill Street Blues might eventually receive the same careful treatment afforded to other landmark series.

Thankfully, that moment finally arrived.

Working alongside existing rights arrangements and restoration efforts, Twentieth Century Fox Television and Shout! Factory played an important role in helping bring the complete series back to audiences in a thoughtfully produced collector’s edition.

The resulting release did far more than place episodes on shelves. It preserved performances, stories and television history for a new generation of viewers — while allowing longtime fans to revisit the precinct once again.

“For longtime viewers, it felt like welcoming old friends home.”
